European Cities in a Global Era
conference in Copenhagen, 14-15 November 2002
Copenhagen X
Subject
Scenario
Game Workshop with Raoul Bunschoten
A number of key partners, related to
the urban development of Copenhagen, will be involved in the actual game as animators,
players and nurses: - private investors, representatives from the Metro, the
Ørestadsselskab, the Copenhagen Harbour etc. as well as the municipalities of Copenhagen
and Frederiksberg. In addition to those, citizens from the Neighbourhood Regeneration
groups, partner organizations etc. as well as students from the Copenhagen Educational
Institutions will be involved - among other things - as players.
Who
The
workshop is a cooperation between Copenhagen X and the Dutch Architect Raoul Bunschoten
from CHORA Urban Institute in London.
During the Summer/Autumn of 2002, Raoul Bunschoten will visit Copenhagen in order
to prepare the registration of the city phenomenons and the prototypes, and to excercise
the animators, who will be heading the games at the tables.
Where and when:
The
workshop takes place from Tuesday, the 12th of November up to and including Friday, the 15th of
November, 2002 at "Fyrskibet" a former lightship with quayberth at
Christians Brygge.
More about the workshop
The
workshop itself will be carried through as a series of games, taking place during four
days. 5 tables will be set up. Each table has 4-6 players, an animator and a
nurse. The animator is the head of the table and the soul of the game. The
nurse will take minutes, inform Raoul Bunschoten as well as the press along
the way. Each game is expected to take upto 2-3 hours.Raoul Bunschoten has experience in
heading such workshops, related to vast planning issues, both in Japan, Norway, Ireland,
Holland and in many other countries, and he will be present during the entire lapse as Game Master.
Raoul Bunschoten describes the
single game lapse as a spiral. With a starting point in a concrete area/problem of urban
character, a dialoque between the participating players is created and it will elevate the
total level of understanding among the participants. If the dialoque stops, it is carried
on by an animator, which among other things is in possession of the database and a
prototype, to be used as tools to qualify the dialogue. As a result of the dialogue, new
prototypes, new urban concepts, disclosure of unknown needs as well as a better
understanding of the potential of the selected areas, will emerge.
Documentation
As a
conclusion to the workshop, Raoul Bunschoten will give a lecture, comprising the
preliminary results and findings of the workshop. Subsequently, a report - which partly
documents the process from registration and building up of the database to the carrying
through of the games - will be made.
